About the TExES

Texas Administrative Code (TAC) §230.5(b) requires every person seeking educator certification in Texas to perform satisfactorily on comprehensive examinations.

testingThe purpose of these examinations is to ensure that each educator has the prerequisite content and professional knowledge necessary for an entry-level position in Texas public schools.

The Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) program and the Examination for the Certification of Educators in Texas (ExCET) program were developed for this purpose.

Test Steps

1.) Apply to ECAP

2.) ECAP will approve testing for the content exam(s) that corresponds with your certification area.

3.) When you are notified that you have been approved for testing, follow the Test Registration instructions to the right.

* If an intern is not successful on an exam, a review is required before permission to retest is given.

To meet No Child Left Behind requirements a candidate must satisfy one of the following:
  • Have 24 hours of course work (12 hours of upper level courses) in the subjects(s) to be taught, acceptable GPA (see application package)

    or
  • Pass the TExES content test.

Most certification areas require candidates to take and pass the content area TEXES to meet the requirements of "highly qualified" for No Child Left Behind.

School districts will recruit first for certified teachers, then for non-certified teachers who have passed the content area TExES.
