| I teach a Math Review class four periods a day that serves as a second block of math for all the 9th graders who failed the math portion of the TAKS test last year in the eighth grade. Early on I struggled to find things to do with them. I have found a few activities/techniques to keep in my arsenal for things to do with them, but could use more. Is anyone in the same situation/teaching a similar class that has had some success? |

I've been working with the AVID program for 3 years now, and a lot of the kids I've helped seem to learn better with white board assignments where they all get together & work it out together, using each other's techniques.
I believe that is something we just discussed in the Summer Course.
Another thing I've done, is to build up their confidence by helping them break the problem down to smaller components, so that they can attack each part of a problem piece by piece. And I encourage all my students to try without the calculator first, so they won't be totally dependent on it, but I remind them that those tools are usually available during quizzes, tests, etc.
I also try and teach them to draw representations of the problem out, to help their minds comprehend the problems. This is more prevalent with word problems. But teaching them to see more than just numberrs tends to have positive results. |
