I have a bilingual student who is very smart and could do much better in school if his parents would be involved in the day-to-day activities of his son. This student is also the one that always create problems or try to attract attention of the class with bad behaviors. The problem is that their parents do not sign their communicator and the only time that they react is when their kid is sent back home.
A couple of weeks ago, I give them a surprise visit on Saturday afternoon and was able to meet the father. During my short conversation with the father of my student I recommended the opportunity to meet with him and his wife, but his response was that he will try to see what he can do (the reason that I got from him was, that he works during the day and his mother at night, so it is difficult for them to do it).
What would be your recommendation (s) as a next step? |

| It's great that you've taken your role to the caring extent that you have. From your description, it looks like the parents are somewhat detached and uninterested in working on the situation; they may be primarily preoccupied with just surviving and keeping their family's ship afloat--you can't be sure. If you are able to make the time in your schedule again, any meeting about the student's issues would be better than nothing. You might have to settle for a face-to-face with one parent and a phone call or two with the other. Once the parents both understand how much it matters to their child's teacher, their responses and action should slowly become evident in the student's classroom response. |
