Frequently Asked Questions
New Applicants
Do you have an application deadline?
No, we accept applications year round on a rolling basis. We do recommend that you apply by March 31st to allow time to search for a job before summer training in July.
How long does the program take?
The program is designed to take one year to complete. SBEC rules dictate that alternative certification participants serve a full school year under a certification program before receiving their standard certificate.
Will I find a job during the first year?
On average, almost 90% of our accepted applicants who commit to summer academy have found employment during their first year, however, since 2008 economic stresses in many school districts slowed hiring rates. As a result, job availability is even more dependent on your certification area. Look at our certification areas section to determine which positions are high-need.
How soon can I teach?
You are eligible to teach as soon as you are accepted. This process can be completed in a very short time frame depending on your educational background. While school districts do post and fill some openings during the school year, the majority of job openings are filled during the summer months.
Will I get a degree from ECAP?
While ECAP is not a degree granting institution, you can receive 15 hours of graduate transfer credit toward Louisiana College´s Masters Degree in Teaching . Call Louisiana College at 318-487-7304 for more information.
How do I know what I can teach?
First, think about the age children you want to teach (elementary, middle school, high school). Next consider what subject you enjoy most. If you have a major that is different than the subject or grade level you want to teach, you can take and pass a content test to prove proficiency.
Do I have to pass a test to start training?
While many individuals require a passed TExES exam to gain acceptance to training, those who earned a college major in the area of certification they wish to teach can often enter training and even accept a teaching position before taking the TExES content exam.
I passed my content test. What next?
Once you´ve passed your content test and your online interview you should receive an acceptance letter from ECAP. Once this letter is received, it´s time to start looking for a job if you haven´t already done so. If you have already applied at school districts, make sure you update your applications at this time.

Do I have to find a job before I can register for Summer Academy?
No, you only need to be accepted into ECAP. Many candidates get job offers during the training.
When is Summer Academy?
Summer Academy will take place during the first three full weeks of July. Days and times are Monday through Friday. It starts at 9:00am and ends at 4:00pm daily.
Do I have to attend Summer academy before I can teach?
No, however, training is the foundation of our program. By attending training first, you become a more attractive candidate for employment. Our training is also designed to help you succeed during your first days in the classroom. ECAP does, however, accommodate those individuals who are hired late in the season and missed the opportunity to train. We have a modified version of the program that allows these individuals to accept a teaching position if offered.
How do I answer employment application questions?
Here are the key questions and answers:
What type of certificate do you hold?
Probationary Certificate
When is your certificate effective?
August, Current Year
When does your certificate expire?
August, Next Year
If I don´t find a job do I still have to pay the program fee?
If you do not find a job, you do not pay the program fee ($3300.00). This does not apply to the training fee ($450.00) or the application fee.
When do I apply for my standard certificate?
Even though you have completed your training and testing requirements it´s best to wait until May. ECAP does not solicit principal and advisor recommendations until May, therefore your application will be held until May before it is recommended.
I´m having trouble completing 30 hours of classroom observation. What should I do?
The State Board for Educator Certification requires that you complete 30 hours of classroom observation before entering your own classroom . 15 of these hours may be satisfied through video observation as provided for in your acceptance packet. This means that at least 15 hours must be completed in the classroom. If you are have difficulty meeting this requirement email Sharon Fikes at sfikes@ecapteach.com.
